I know a lot of purple lovers will be rejoicing at this year’s pick for the Pantone Color of 2018: Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple.
Pantone says they have not chosen a purple with royal associations but one associated with imagination, inventiveness and creativity. It’s also associated with a mystical, spiritual quality and getting away from the troubles of the world. Eiseman, the Pantone Color Institute’s Executive Director, cited Frank Lloyd Wright, Wagner and Prince as inspirations. I get Prince, but I never thought of Wright or Wagner as being associated with purple in their works, but who knows!
As far as this color choice goes, we’ve kind of made a mess of things on this planet lately, so looking into the night sky and the next galaxy might be the way to go, lol.
This will really date me, but I remember Andy Warhol’s and Salvador Dali’s colleague and muse, the actor and artist known as Ultra Violet, Isabelle Collin Dufresne who died in 2014.
Though purple is not one of my absolute favorites, I still like the shade. Selecting Ultra Violet as the Color of 2018 has major implications for makeup in the coming year. It’s a relatively easy color for most of us to wear in eye shadow, nail polish, lipstick, and maybe even blush if you’re more adventurous. In fact, I certainly won’t need to run out and buy anything because I have a good representation of purple in my stash already. But that doesn’t mean that others won’t. In fact,on Facebook this morning, lots of women were talking about the possibility of Urban Decay coming out with an all-purple palette – makes sense to me!
So what do you think about Ultra Violet? Yea or nay?
