Many of us have begun making lists of holiday gifts to buy, and some of us have already started shopping. But before you get too deep into it, I’d like to introduce you to a gift option that gives back to those in need.
The faith-based charitable organization, World Vision, contacted me a few weeks ago about their work and their gift catalog. I was somewhat familiar with World Vision from seeing some of their ads on TV to help support children and families. I am pleased to learn more about their good works and how we can get on board.
World Vision helps to support those living in extreme poverty in 32 countries/states throughout the world as well as in the United States. They have a number of ways to help people in need ultimately provide for themselves through:
- animals: cows, goats, sheep, chicken, and ducks – animals that help a family feed and support itself. Two chickens can be sent to a family for just $25! For larger animals like a cow, you can buy a “share” if the cost of an entire animal is too high.
- education: helping girls, who ordinarily would not be able to get an education, go to school as well as providing school supplies
- bicycles: transportation for a child or a family
- job training especially for women as well as micro-loans to help women start small businesses.
To help those in the U.S., you can feed a family for a day, provide a backpack of school supplies or provide for disaster relief.
And there are other ways to help that you can learn more about on the World Vision online catalog.
Gifts That Give Back
World Vision’s Gift Catalog makes it easy to donate and to get some of your holiday shopping done at the same time.
In their paper catalog and on their website, you will see the beautiful, handmade gifts that are available. They range from a hand dyed silk scarf, to hand carved serving utensils, fair-trade coffee beans with a bag handmade in Africa, handmade jewelry, Christmas ornaments, and many other beautiful gifts. Check ’em out yourself on line so you can really see the details.
World Vision was kind enough to send me a gorgeous pair of turquoise stone, silver tone earrings with a matching bracelet so that you can see the quality. They arrived in lovely net gift bags.
I love them! They are very well made, and they are just my style. And they would make a beautiful gift!
So please visit the World Vision website to order from the gift catalog or to learn more about World Vision’s background and good works. Also, in 2014, 85% of World Vision’s operating expenses were used for programs that benefit children, families and communities in need.
I think it’s such a great way for those of us who are fortunate to give back! You can also call toll-free to request a catalog or to order at 855-WV-GIFTS. And you can actually see where your dollars go by visiting the World Vision YouTube Channel. I hope you will consider World Vision as you plan both your holiday gift-giving and charitable giving this year.
