In keeping with January new beginnings, Sephora Play called their subscription bag “Happy You Year” and it’s on the white cotton bag. Cute.
Before I get into it, I got the 6 items as usual, but thankfully, there was no perfume sample. And I didn’t miss it one bit. Instead, I got another sample. Good!
December was a good Play bag for me. So what did I get this time?
- Make Up For Ever Artist Face Color, shade Blush: This was my favorite item in the bag. Blush, a peach with golden shimmer, makes either a beautiful highly pigmented blush or highlighter. Love this. It’s perfect for me.
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Lipgloss, shade Kristen: I recently reviewed the ABH Lipgloss that I bought in December. I chose the color I bought, of course, and I love the ABH Lipgloss formula. I was so happy to see this ABH lipgloss in the bag, but the color, a brownish-mauve, just doesn’t suit me although it doesn’t look so bad in the lip swatch. I cannot wear those brown lipsticks, but they must be back in vogue (calling the 90s to come get your lipsticks!) because I keep receiving them. I wore it today to do errands and wear around the house to keep my lips from drying out, but I think the color is a miss for me. In real life, I think the shade looks worse than in the photos. I wish that Sephora Play did a survey after we receive our bags like Ipsy does.
- GlamGlow SuperCleanse: Although I adore GlamGlow, a pore-refining charcoal super cleansing cream is the last thing I need. Goes in the giveaway pile.
- Clinique PepStart Eye Cream: Though this gel-cream eye cream is a bit lighterweight than I might choose, it’s a good eye cream especially if you’re younger than I am.
- Boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel: I like Boscia skincare, so I was pleased to see this. I am going to try this peel gel tonight.
- Gloss Moderne Clean Luxury Masque: At first, I thought I got two face masks in my bag, and I thought that was a little weird. But turns out this masque from new-to-me Gloss Moderne is a hair masque. The size of the sample looks a little small for my thick mop, but I will give it a try tomorrow when I wash my hair.
So that’s it. I was delighted by the MUFE Face Color, and I would have been about the ABH Lipgloss had the shade suited me more (why not a red, Sephora Play???). Except for the GlamGlow SuperCleanse that’s from a brand I love but not the right product for me, the rest of the samples were fine. Based on my preferences and needs, it was an OK bag that could have been a great bag. I was thinking of cancelling, but the fact that it had MUFE, ABH and GlamGlow in it make me want to hang on another month.
What did you get in your Sephora Play bag?

90s lipstick does indeed seem to be in right now. I’m not totally complaining. I can dig a brownish-mauve from time to time. I don’t think your gloss looks bad! Maybe just a bit more editorial than everyday.
“Editorial”, that’s cool, Rach. Unfortunately, I’m not, lol. BTW, did you get the 20% off coupon from Ulta? I think I’m going to buy the brown glitter UD liner along with a few staples that I need.
I did, actually! I don’t usually get those so it was a nice surprise. Now I just have to figure a trip down there into my schedule or come up with an order that meets the shipping threshold. Maybe I’ll get the darker blue glitter liner! Or maybe Midnight Cowboy. Or another razor sharp liner. Or two…. Lol. I’ve been having much eyeliner fun lately. And still no one has said anything. I think maybe one of the men finally caught it when he was inadvertently half-blinded by the reflective properties (the look was almost priceless, hahahahaha) but I think he didn’t dare bring it up.
So, I went to Ulta today, and I actually mentioned you, the enabler, in my post for tomorrow where I show my haul. Spoiler alert, I bought Zodiac. And I tried to buy Punk Rock, but it was out of stock in the store so I bought Midnight Cowboy (looks gorgeous in the tube) that I will exchange for Punk Rock when it comes back to the store. I like your thinking!
I’m gonna be famous?!?!? Or infamous, as the case may be, haha.
Online cart stocking is currently in progress here. Right now I’m thinking Heavy Metal in Spandex, and Razor Sharp in Snakebite. And probably a few random hair products.
Oh and I hope you looooooooove Zodiac as much as I do!!!
So far, I’ve just swatched it on my hand and I’m in love. I had plug put into my tear ducts today, so I’m skipping the war paint today, but I can hardly wait to try it. I looked up Spandex and Snakebite, and they’re both gorgeous. I saw Spandex in the store, and I thought about it too. Your cart sounds similar to mine 😉
You can’t go wrong with a MUFE blush, the pigmentation and longevity are remarkable and the shade that you got is beautiful too! I actually like that eye cream but only for the day time.

I agree with you on both: I adore the MUFE blush and the Clinique Pep Start eye cream is really good, lightweight for daytime and an excellent “first eye cream” for a younger woman than I.
That MUFE Face Color was made for you! What a great score! I actually like the color of the ABH Lip Gloss on you, I think it looks beautiful on you. If you feel that it is too dark, then lighten it up with another color, perhaps?

Thank you, Helen! I think your idea about altering the color is a good one. I have never done that with a lipgloss, but it’s worth a try!
I actually really like that lip color on you. I usually rock a deep mauve or a purple.
Thank you! I guess I’m not used to seeing myself in this brown a shade. Fun though to try it!
That blush looks really nice, and I actually like the lip gloss on you. I can’t really imagine how it can be that bad, but it’s all about preference.
Thank you, Ana. I guess I’m used to seeing myself with more color. I think I look like a corpse though the shade is pretty. 😉
Yeah I understand.
You’re welcome hun. ❤
In the photos the lipstick shade looks great on you, bummer that in real life it didn’t work for you. I decided to stop my Sephora play subscription. Out of the year I had it or so, many times (April through October) products were melted (like stick shadow or lipstick in a tube) because it’s just too dang hot here.
If you had to pick just ONE BOX subscription in the makeup line WHAT WOULD IT BE? 🙂
Oh, Gloria, that is such a hard one. So here’s my answer. I am cheap, and that’s why I subscribed to Ipsy and Sephora Play – they’re $10 delivered. If you like to try sample/travel size prestige brands, go with Sephora Play. Ipsy is fun because of the makeup bags but they are a little juvenile. Also, Ipsy is more indie brands though they seem to have more prestige brands these days. If you can spend a little more, I would go with BoxyCharm (5-6 beauty products 4 of which are full size) or Glossybox (full size and deluxe size). Both are $21/month with discounts for longer subscriptions. I had a PR sample GlossyBox subscription for a month or two and it was very nice, and the box it comes in is gorgeous. But from what I’ve seen online, I would probably choose BoxyCharm for their product mix. I think you should check out the websites for both of those. I am considering dumping Ipsy and Sephora Play because I have subscribed to both of them for a very long time, and trying BoxyCharm. LMK what you think, Gloria!!
Thanks after looking at the different boxes I decided that the BoxyCharm would give me a nice variety. So I have ordered and hope to get one next month. Have a good evening
Gloria, I have my fingers crossed that you get a good box! Let me know what you get. Sephora Play told me that my credit card has been charged for February, but I think I will cancel both Sephora Play and Ipsy after I get the February bags, and subscribe to BoxyCharm instead. I need a change of pace. And as I said, I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen other women get in their boxes.
I’m so with you on the brown lip color. It is a color that never looked good on me and will never look good on me! 🙂 Love your comment, yes, ’90s, come get your lipsticks. Ugh. Nice write-up, though.
Thank you, Michele! xo I am going to try mixing the brownish lipgloss with another shade and see if I can come up with something more wearable. I’ll report back if it works! I looked at the Anastasia Lipgloss shades today at Ulta. You know that in addition to mauves and corals, I love red. I was all set to buy a red during the Ulta 20% off coupon event but the only red was called Vamp, a deep burgundy red – it’s gorgeous, but I wanted either a true red or an orange red so I passed. I can’t believe ABH Lipgloss doesn’t have a true red!
The 90s brown lip has been having a moment for awhile, although I’m on board with it, having lived through high school in the 90s lol! (Although I still wore a rosey color, not brown…I’m nostalgic in hindsight!). Anyway I would have been happy with that gloss and the blush as well – that blush will suit you perfect!
I’m going to see if there’s a way to warm up the brown with another shade, but I’ve never done that with a lipgloss. Hopefully, I can figure it out.
This is a good bag actually. I like the lipstick on you but I know what you mean since I don’t always like sample lip products. The blush is very nice. I have one (different color) that’s going traveling with me so I can bring two shades of blush and save space.
Today, when I was at Ulta for the sale, I looked at ABH lipglosses to see if they had a red which is what I would have loved. They have about a lot of neutrals but only one red, called Vamp, that’s actually a deep burgundy and not what I had in mind. Oh well. I think I’ll take Helen’s suggestion and try to mix the brown with another shade to warm it up. In my photos it doesn’t look bad, but in person, I look like a corpse 😉 And yes, the MUFE blush is great. Glad you’ll take yours with you on your trip!
It’s definitely worth the $10. The blush/highlighter that you got is beautiful! I got the bag and opened it but don’t even remember if mine was the same or different than yours. LOL! Life’s been a bit busy. I’m not into the brown lip either.
Just say no to brown lips 😉
I would have LOVED this bag, why oh why did I cancel! I may have to reup my Sephora Play subscription.
Cassie, I was amazed that I have already used every single thing in this bag except for the hair mask, and I’ll use that next time I wash my hair. This ended up being a surprisingly good bag for me. I was on the verge of cancelling too, but now I’m so sure.
