During the week, I usually stick to neutral mattes or neutrals with a little shimmer. But for holidays, it’s fun to kick it up a notch. This year metallic eyes are in, but I think metallics are in any year. It’s a classic look IMHO.
On Sunday evening, Jeff and I went to a holiday party at Flatrocks, an art gallery in Gloucester. Even though it wasn’t a fancy affair, I still wanted to look festive. I wore a black and white outfit, and I decided to go with a cool-toned silvery black metallic eye. Ulta Beauty and People Style Watch helped me add some new goodies to my stash. Thank you, thank you! I recently realized that the vast majority of my eyeshadow palettes are from Ulta Beauty. I was thrilled when I found the fabulous Japanesque Pixelated Color Eye Shadow Palette at my local Ulta Beauty Store!
This is what I did:
- To anchor my eye look, I primed my lids with Urban Decay Anti-aging Eye Primer.
- I tightlined my upper waterline with Lancome Drama Liqui-Pencil in Noir. That pencil really is as advertised. It doesn’t come off on my lower waterline!
- Next I used the Japonesque Pixelated Color Eye Shadow Palette to create my metallic look. I used my brand new IT Cosmetics eye brush from the Must Have Airbrush 3 Piece Face & Eye Travel Brush Set to apply the shadow. I placed matte neutral pale peach Shade 02 in the inner corner. I used a metallic grey Shade 05 across the lid, matte milk chocolate Shade 03 in the crease, and black matte Shade 04 in the V. I don’t think I’ve ever used a black eye shadow before. This was my initiation, lol. I blended it all, and then used a touch of silver shimmer Shade 08 in the middle of the lid.
- I went back and created a cat eye with the Lancome eye pencil in Noir. I’m getting a little better at it. My downturned eyes really look better with the uplift that a cat eye can give. I’ve started creating the lift from the outer 2/3 of the eye and then connecting the line and filling it in.
- I used Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Riot (purple) to line the outer 1/3 of my lower lashline.
- I finished the look with Too Faced Lashgasm Mascara.
I thought about wearing red lipstick, but I knew this was an arty, granola-ish crowd so I went with a more restrained rose shade instead. I had to laugh. I may have been one of the few women at the opening who was wearing eye makeup or noticeable eye makeup, but it made me feel good!
Happy Holidays and enjoy the festivities! What’s your go-to holiday look?

Thank you so much, Helen! xoxo
Utterly fabulous! I wish I could pull off metallics. Love the look of that palette – is it baked? The pigmentation is awesome.

Thank you, Renu! The packaging that came with the palette does not say baked, though the rounded pans makes it look that way. Japonesque describe is as “high pigment prismatic shadow” with an “opalescent finish”. I should do a review with swatches for this palette because it’s very pretty.
Love this look! The cat eye flatters you and the shimmer is super-festive. Glad you made it to the show.
Thank you so much, Kim, and for taking the time to let me know! I wish I could more reliably reproduce the cat eyeliner coz when I get it right or close to right, it does look good. We had a good time at Flatrocks. Diana and Ricardo were there as well as some friends of Miriam and Arley who Jeff & I know. There was a big crowd and entertainment! There were some interesting pieces from a couple of artists. Worth the trip!
Love your look! Noticeable eye makeup is good to me! I’ve never tried the Japonesque brand for anything other than brushes. I’ll swatch when I’m at Ulta again.
Thank you, Stacie! My local Ulta doesn’t usually have Japonesque in the store, so I was truly excited, like jumping for joy, when I found this palette on the shelf. I really love it. At some point, I’ll swatch it and do a full review.
Very pretty! I have the same issue with my eyes, a little winged liner really opens them up. You can’t go wrong with metallic shades during the holidays 🙂
I agree, Megan! Metallics looks shiny and festive!
I love this look on you so pretty! My go to is a smoky eye.
Thanks so much, Leigh! I wish I could do a real smoky eye, but I fear it’s too much for me at this stage of the game 😉
Love the sparkle! And you have gorgeous eyes!!

Thanks, PJ! Unfortunately, the sun had set by the time we were getting ready for the party so I couldn’t take the photos in natural light where you could really see the metallic sheen. I hate winter! It’s dark here at 4pm 🙁
It’s time for that never ending skin care routine! I haven’t tried the Urban Decay primer yet, but I am also looking for something new. Thanks for the dets.
The UD Anti-aging Eye Primer is a good one. Worth trying!
YESSS! SO BEAUTIFUL!!! While reading your post I was like, “yessss, so beautifullll… work it.” love it!!!

Thank you, Ursula!
Wow, wow, wow – this is SUCH a gorgeous look! I usually shy away from metallic shadows as I don’t know how to wear them but you did such a great job!!

Thank you so much, Elaine! I was afraid of metallics but then I gave them a try and I’m hooked. For the holidays and special occasions, I think I can get away with it!
I love this palette!
The Japonesque palette is amazing! I’ve gotta do something with the purples soon
Awww, how pretty! I’ve never used anything from Japonesque, but I’ve heard great things about their brushes! That eyeshadow palette looks gorgeous.

Yes, they’re known for their great brushes, but you’d love this Japonesque palette, Sammi.
This looks absolutely fabulous on you. Good for you to make the occasion special and stand out. I don’t understand why women wouldn’t make an effort unless it was so they wouldn’t compete with your fabulous look!
I really like how subtle your cat eye is. I’ll have to try again.
Thank you so much, Marcia! I like to get dressed up and wear makeup. This was an artsy crowd but many are former hippies, I’d say. I’m still working on the cat eye. Hopefully, I’ll get it reliably down one of these days coz it does help my down-turned eyes look more lifted
Such a gorgeous silver look!
Thanks, Mai!
You slayed it! Those sparkly eyelids are everything. I think you looked beautiful. That palette has been on my wish list for awhile. It’s so pretty.
Thank you sooooo much, Rachel! I think you would really love the Japonesque Pixelated Color palette. It’s so handy because it has both neutral mattes, neutral shimmers and bright shimmers. It’s so much fun. I was shocked when I saw it on the shelf at my Ulta because they don’t usually carry Japonesque makeup in the store. I lucked out. I hope the palette comes your way!
Those eyeshadow shades are absolutely gorgeous, perfect for Christmas time xxx
The Japonesque Pixelated Color palette is so wonderful for holidays or anytime because it has the neutral mattes, neutral shimmers and bright shimmers. So fun!
Ooh, that shimmer! This looks amazing! I need to look into that palette.
You would love the Japonesque Pixelated Color palette! So versatile, so gorgeous!
Shine on girl! Do they say that anymore? LOL
I like it! You can bring back the saying if they don’t 😉
Great EOTD! I’ve been rocking metallic eyes from time to time too 🙂
Thank you, Anastasia! Metallics are so much fun. I was thinking about the super-metallic gold in the Lorac Unzipped Gold palette but my outfit said silver to me
You look festive and fabulous. You should also do style/outfit posts

WOW! That eye colour looks fantastic!! I LOVE metallic looks. I’ve been meaning to try japonesque for a while now, it’s on my list of brands to try. But damn, with that colour I think you’ve got me sold!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot, Ashlyn! I was pleased with the way it turned out. I definitely recommend the Japonesque Piselated Color Palette. Next I need to try the teals and the purples!
Ohhhh Allison, those metallics are lovely on you! And a holiday party at a gallery sounds super fun, my kind of thing.
