Nick Ward is the artist whose work, Ready or Not Here I Come, I use at the masthead for my blog. I met him a year and a half ago at the Open Studios in Southie in Boston. I bought a print of Ready or Not and asked him if I could use the jpeg on my blog, and he agreed. I love the confidence of the woman as she applies her red lipstick and presents herself to the world!
Nick paints large, figurative works. Women are often the subjects. They are sometimes shown applying their make-up or sunbathing. Sometimes they’re traditionally beautiful, sometimes they are shown in an almost hyper-real state, as if you can see through their skin. He depicts human flesh in a way that is reminiscent of but more appealing to me than Lucien Freud.
Read the interview from the link above written by the staff at Sloane Merrill Gallery in Boston where he had a painting in their recent show “Back to Back”. Take a look at the photos of Nick and his work, and stop into his studio for a visit during the next Open Studios in South Boston. He’s a friendly guy. I wish I had room for one of his 4 x 5 foot sunbathers. They have quite a presence!
Here’s a link to Nick’s own recent blogpost that will give you further insight into his work and the Sunbather #4 painting in particular.
