In February 2014, I got to spend almost a week in Phoenix staying at a resort that was right across the street from where I was conducting a market research project. I was thrilled to get out of snowy Massachusetts! On a day off, I had a facial at the resort’s spa. There, I was introduced to a local skincare brand of glycolic acid facial pads that I purchased. I liked them a lot, and when I used them up, I searched for where I could repurchase. I discovered Skincare by Alana by searching the brand on Google. SkincarebyAlana.com is a website with a huge selection of fabulous natural or organic skincare and makeup brands. Some brands were indies like the brand of glycolic pads, and others were well-known.
Shopping on Skincare by Alana
Alana of Skincare by Alana is a day spa owner in California and a licensed esthetician. She’s been working in the beauty industry and with day spa products her entire life. In addition to her own career, Alana’s mother owned day spas, beauty supply stores and hair salons, so Alana literally grew up in a beauty supply store. This young woman really knows her stuff! And you can benefit from her and her employees’ knowledge of skincare, because you can always speak to an esthetician on the phone if you need some assistance in determining which products to buy for yourself or for someone else that will meet your/their skincare needs.
After I mentioned her website as a source for purchasing some of my favorite products and brands in a fairly recent blogpost, Alana got in touch and gave me the opportunity to pick out two products from her vast inventory for review and for a GIVEAWAY. That was so generous! I mentioned her website as a retail source on my own because I was so impressed with her specialization in natural and organic brands as well as the sheer number of brands and products available on her site. Plus she has free shipping on all orders within the US, and that’ll get me every time! You can also get 10% off your order by signing up for her email. I did that ages ago, and with her email notifications that usually come about once a week, I know about everything that’s on sale and also receive coupon codes that are good on everything.
In the past when I shopped her site, I knew exactly what I needed to buy because I was replacing a product I had used up. Shopping for something new was amazing and almost overwhelming though seriously fun because of all the choices! I literally spent hours browsing ShoppingbyAlana.com considering just about everything. I was trying to decide on the two products to choose, and it was tough for me to narrow it down.
I finally selected the products to try from two brands that were on my “To Try” list for a long time:
Glo-Minerals Illuminating Highlighter
Strobing (aka highlighting) is really big now. I have a powder illuminator and a couple of stick illuminators, but no creams. I am the queen of cream makeup, so I had to fill in that hole in my stash. And I wanted to try something from Glo-Minerals. So Glo-Minerals Highlighter Illuminateur it was.
Here’s what Skincare by Alana’s website says about the highlighter:
“Glo-Minerals Highlighter adds just a hint of natural-looking light to the surface of your skin. Use the universally colored pink luminizer on your face and the rest of your body for a subtle, natural glow that looks like you’ve been kissed by the sun. Glo-Minerals Highlighter instantly brightens the complexion and is the perfect finishing touch for all skin types and conditions.”
The Glo-Minerals Highlighter exceeded my expectations. It’s a gorgeous shimmery cream in light pink that gives a youthful, radiant glow. I think it’s the perfect shade for me. But it would look lovely on anyone who likes pink shades. It would be stunning on someone with a deep skin tone.
Here are a couple of swatches, the second one is the shimmer you get when it’s just about, but not quite all rubbed in.
Because I have bangs, it tends to limit where I can place it, lol, because my temples are hidden by hair! So I put it on my cupid’s bow, on the bridge of my nose, and on my cheekbones. Such a lovely shimmer.
What I didn’t know is that the highlighter is also skincare! It contains vitamins and minerals as well as aloe vera. It’s made from minerals, and it contains physical sunscreen, titanium dioxide and iron oxide – that was a surprise. I don’t apply enough of it to use it as a sunscreen but I guess you could if you want an all-over pink glow 😉
Glo-Minerals Illuminating Highlighter contains 12 ml/0.4 fl. oz., and it comes in a plastic tube. I usually apply it with my fingers, but you could easily use a brush or beauty blender. Glo-Minerals Highlighter is priced at $16.50.
TokyoMilk Dark, Excess Eau de Parfum
Over the past few months, I have been intrigued by TokyoMilk, a brand that makes perfume and perfumed body care products. Every trip to Sephora, I try a few different TokyoMilk fragrances on my skin to see what suits me. There is quite a variety to choose from.
I decided that I wanted to choose a TokyoMilk product as my second gift from Alana. I almost went with a shower gel, but at the last minute, I decided to take a chance on an eau de parfum called Excess No. 28. I like Oriental spicy, often gender-neutral scents. The fact that my choice was from the “Dark” collection was not happenstance. I usually look for scents that are amber-colored rather than light yellow, pink or purple.
Because I hadn’t tried a sample of Excess at any of my Sephora trips, I checked it out on Fragrantica.com before I requested it. Here’s what I learned.
“Perfumer Margot Elena presents her Tokyo Milk Dark perfume collection in early 2011. Excess is an unusual fragrance of rich and exciting dark components. Notes: blood orange, amber, patchouli and oak.”
The description peaked my interest, and it sounded like the type of scent I usually go for. I’m big into amber and patchouli. The scent tended to seen as for fall/winter and night by the raters, though others wore it year round at any time of day. There were way more likes than dislikes. Sold, I’ll try it!
To me, TokyoMilk Dark, Excess No. 28 Eau de Parfum smells quite like an exotic cedar chest holding all kinds of precious things, and I think that’s a good thing. Though patchouli may be the main note, this scent is not hippyish in the least.
A number of Fragantica reviewers mention the scent of oud (the dark, fragrant resin from agarwood in India) coming through. Check out some of the descriptions by those who are much better at describing scents than I am: http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Tokyo-Milk-Parfumarie-Curiosite/Excess-13159.html
Skincare by Alana describes it this way: “Tokyo Milk Excess No. 28 Perfume is excessive in all the right ways, featuring a bold scene that blends amber resin, patchouli, and citrus for an intoxicating aroma.” It is definitely a gender-neutral scent, and it could easily be worn by a man. I like it a lot because it’s so different from every other scent (including all the gender-neutral ones) I own.
TokyoMilk Dark, Excess No. 28 Eau de Parfum comes in a mysterious-looking 60 ml black glass spray bottle like all the other TokyoMilk fragrances. I like the look. It’s priced at $36.
So what are we giving away this time, you ask? Skincare by Alana is giving away the two products that I tried:
