National Summer Celebrations This Week

What’s the saying, “I’m a day late and a dollar short”? Well, I’m 3 days late to wish the Canadians, our dear neighbors to the north, a Happy Canada Day. Canada Day was on July 1. The date marks July 1, 1867 when Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain. It also celebrates the federation of four provinces: Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Ontario; and Quebec. The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982. Since 1983, July 1 has been officially known as Canada Day. I hope all our Canadian friends enjoyed the day set aside to mark the occasion!

In the U.S., today is Independence Day, known in modern times as July 4th or the Fourth of July. The holiday commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America. The delegates of the Second Continental Congress declared that the 13 original colonies were no longer subject and subordinate to King George III, the monarch of Britain. Instead, the colonies were  united with each other and, importantly, free and independent states.

In both Canada and the US, people often celebrate the holidays with parades and fireworks as well as BBQs and get togethers with friends and family.

Happy Belated Canada Day and Happy Independence Day! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
