August 2015 Empties

End of summer means empty sunscreen. And I know there’ll be more in September. But I’ve also got a few other empties or things that are old and have to be tossed.

Sunscreens

The sunscreen empties are:

MyChelle Sun Shield Coconut Broad Spectrum SPF 28: In June, I received 3  sunscreens from MyChelle, a natural brand with physical sunscreen in all three formulas. All three were very lightweight especially for sunscreens with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. I really liked the coconut scent, and I used this for my body. I’ve just about used up the other two I got as well. I really liked this brand: it’s cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free. I will buy them next summer.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 55: I finished up this travel size sunscreen. I bought it specifically for my face because it was a “dry-touch” formula as well as SPF 55. I liked it. It really was lightweight. It uses chemical sunscreen. If I hadn’t discovered the super-lightweight La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen that I like a little better, I’d probably get this one again but I don’t like it quite as much as the LPR.

Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen SPF 60: This was a free sample with something else I bought from Neutrogena. It uses physical sunscreen ingredients. Although it was heavier than the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch, I liked this. It smelled good, had a high SPF, used physical sunscreen ingredients. I would buy it again.

Other Empties

Vitabath Heavenly Coconut Creme  Sulfate & Paraben Free Body Wash: This is my favorite scent from the Vitabath Sulfate & Paraben Free Body Wash lineup. It really is a heavenly scent. I love it! I have another one waiting in the wings!

MEG 21 Bright & Firm Eye Treatment: I received this eye cream to try out this past winter. Because the blepharitis (red, dry skin) on my eyelids has gotten worse over the years, there is only one eye cream I can use on them. So I used the MEG 21 Bright & Firm Eye Treatment above my lid/under my brows and under my eyes. It’s a very nice eye cream, medium weight, fragrance-free. I didn’t notice any firmer skin above my lid/under my brow, but that’s a tall order, as is any change in my crow’s feet. At some point, you can’t reverse wrinkles. Under my eyes, it did quite well. My dark circles were lighter, and the skin there was nicely hydrated. I do think this is a good eye cream. I probably won’t purchase it again because I have only one eye cream, Lindi Skin, that I can use all around my very sensitive eye area.

Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes with White Tea Extract: I got this travel size in a Target Beauty Box. I adore the white tea scent. That alone would be enough the repurchase these towelettes. They did a decent job removing my face makeup. I had to tug a bit to get off my (non-waterproof) mascara. When it comes to towelettes, I often use whatever I happen to get. The scent and gentleness were the best benefits of these towelettes. I might not go out of my way to buy them again, but I did like them enough.

Sally Hanson Complete Salon Manicure Smooth & Strong: I have been using this treatment product from Sally Hanson for the past couple of years. There’s a bit left in the bottle, but it’s too thick to use. I tried to buy more since I use it as a base coat, but it seems to be discontinued, and I couldn’t figure out exactly what has replaced it. Instead, I bought Seche-Vite Ridge-Filling Base Coat and I like it a lot. Sorry Sally!

NYC In a New York Minute Grand Central Station Quick Dry Topcoat: Like the Sally Hanson base coat, I’ve still got a little bit more left in this bottle, but over the almost year that I’ve had it, the topcoat has thickened, and it’s time to say good-bye. I went to CVS to buy another bottle of this topcoat that costs about a dollar, but I discovered that poor NYC has been given the boot in exchange for elf. Sorry to see you go, NYC! Instead, I bought Seche-Vite Dry Fast Top Coat and I love it! Worth the extra money.

Have you tried any of these cosmetics? What did you use up in August?

  1. I LOVE those Burt’s Bees wipes!!!!! They smell amazing!

    1. The scent is the best! If I buy them again, that will be the reason why

  2. I tried Anthelios XL from La Roche Posay, the Fluide teinte and the dry touch gel-cream. Didn’t get along with these two which is kinda odd. LRP always makes good products and i didn’t have a problem with them, but those two made me break out like crazy 🙁

    1. Oh, and the Seche Vite top coat is amazing. I like that it doesn’t drag down my polish, even if it’s semi-dried.

      1. I was amazed at how fast Seche Vite top coat dries my polish. Wish I hadn’t waited so long to try it!

    2. Oh no, what a bummer, Eva! I think I heard that from someone else, but fortunately nothing makes me break out anymore.

  3. I really like that Neutrogena sunscreen but it looks like I’ll be trying the La Roche Posay one next!

    1. The La Roche Posay Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid is absolutely amazing!

  4. Empties posts are so much fun.

    1. I love reading the short blurbs about products used up. I get some good quick tips!

  5. That’s so sad that you couldn’t find two of the products you were looking for! I’m definitely going to look for that NYC top coat next time I’m in the drugstore. I’m tired of paying more money for pricey top coats that are going to get thick and goopy after awhile anyway!

    1. For a little more than a dollar, NYC Grand Central Station was a good top coat! Bummer that it’s no longer at CVS

  6. I’ve heard a lot of good things about MyChelle products. That Coconut Vitabath Body Wash sounds yummy! Is Vitabath sold in stores?

    1. MyChelle is a really good natural/organic skincare brand. I’ve liked everything I’ve tried: sunscreen and facial serums mostly. The Vitabath body wash is fabulous. There are 5 or 6 different scents, but I’m addicted to the coconut. I buy it at Ulta and stockpile it during the 20% off sales.

  7. I will say it again, you are killing it on the empties girlie! I want to try the Burt’s Bee’s wipes !

  8. I’d been wanting to try those Burt’s Bees wipes, but the Simple ones have been working really well for me.

  9. I loved the MEG21 eye cream for dark circles as well. I don’t stick to a brand of towelettes either haha. It is whatever is nearest the aisle in the supermarket!

  10. My Neutorgena UltraSheer is empty this month too!

    1. Yay! It’s a good one.

  11. The Burt’s Bees Facial towels sound nice!

    1. The white tea scent of the Burt’s Bees wipes is heavenly!

  12. Maybe I will pick up the Mychelle sunscreen for my trip coming up.

    1. Kim, MyChelle is the lightest weight physical sunscreen I’ve found. Although the SPF isn’t super high, I’ve had good luck with it and I love that it’s not heavy.

  13. I’ve only tried the Neutrogena dry touch sunscreen and I like it, but only use it on beach days (mostly in Hawaii).

I like MyChelle products – a lot! I’m currently using the Pumpkin Renew Cream, which smells wonderful. Product works good, but doesn’t turn back the hands of time (darn it!).

    Monica.

    1. I’m laughing, Monica. I don’t think it’s possible to turn back the hands of time either, boo hoo (altho’ I have had some serums fade my dark spots, lip plumpers that plump my lips, moisturizers that make my skin look more supple and full) meaning I haven’t found anything that gets rid of wrinkles that I already own, grrrrrr. Rant over. MyChelle is a very nice product line. I’ve tried a few serums from the brand that I like too. The MyChelle sunscreens are the lightest weight physical sunscreens that I have found so far. They don’t have a high SPF but aesthetically, they’re the best I’ve found.

  14. Natalie Brown says:

I love the smell of coconut too. It always reminds me of the beach. So sad about these discontinued or no longer carried products. The inexpensive alternatives seem to always get the cut. I also use the Seche-Vite top coat. Yes. It has a strong odor but, wow, it’s thick, shiny, and dries quickly. I love it. I can usually find it on Ebay for a good price too. 🙂

    1. I felt bad that NYC got the axe by CVS. 🙁 Thank you for the tip on Seche-Vite, Natalie! I’ll look for it on ebay. Fortunately, I bought these during a CVS sale and with Extrabucks so it wasn’t too bad. Sometimes though, you can really get deals on ebay. I often forget that though.

  15. I’ve gotta get my hands on that Vitabath product! I recently purchased the First Aid Beauty physical sunscreen, but I haven’t tested it yet. I’m trying to stay away from the chemical ones for the time being!

    1. The MyChelle sunscreens are all very lightweight physical sunscreens, too. They’re great and sold at Whole Foods. I haven’t tried the FAB sunscreen yet, but I will!

  16. I don’t think I’ve ever used up a top coat before it got too thick to use. It’s nice to see someone finish things cuz it’s not me!!

    1. hahaha, Marcia. I grew up broke so I am very focused on using things up and making things last. In fact, I’m overly focused on that.

  17. Love that Neutrogena sunscreen!

  18. I love Burts Bees wipes. Kudos on finishing up

    1. The white tea scent of those Burt Bee’s wipes is delicious 🙂

  19. Excellent job finishing up so many products! Three full sunscreens is quite impressive! I like the Burt’s Bees Wipes a lot!

    1. Two of those sunscreens were deluxe samples, but I’m almost finished with two more full-sized sunscreens. I’m trying to remember to always apply it!

  20. I’m always sad when I finish a bottle of Vitabath, they have the best smelling body washes!

    1. I agree. I still like the Original Green Scent too, but the scents in the Sulfate and Paraben-free line smells so fabulous.

  21. You are the sunscreen queen! I am definitely not using enough to have all those empties. I think I got those Burt’s Bees towelettes in the Target box, but I’ve never tried them. I think they just got moved up to the top of the list!

    1. Yes, I use a lot of sunscreen because I’m outside a lot. I’ve got about 6 more tubes in various stages of being used up, lol. Definitely try the Burt’s Bees wipes – the scent is heavenly!

  22. I am a total coconut fan and need the Vitabath in my life!

    1. The Vitabath coconut body wash smells fantastic. I always have a backup bottle waiting in the wings!

  23. I’m intrigued at Neutrogena sunscreen, I may need to try it out. I haven’t done empties for a while and really need to start on post soon as there’s a lot. I may need to break it down to two posts lol

    1. The Neutrogena Ultra Sheer is a really good sunscreen. Very lightweight. I didn’t do any empties posts at the beginning of the year, and I’ve got 6 months worth of empty containers waiting around for a mega post – one of these days 😉

  24. You kicked all the butt on empties! I never completely finish a top coat bottle. I use them constantly but it seems like the end of them are crappy for some reason. Too much dipping I guess lol

    1. Actually, the two nail products were used up all the way but like you said they thickened so much they were unusable 😉

  25. Great job in August! That’s a lot of empties 😉

    1. Always happy to have empties to recycle!

  26. Wow! You emptied so many products. I’m envious! 🙂

  27. Ursula aka Blueridge Beauty says:

I am using up alot of Birchbox samples, lotion for the summer to make way for butters for Fall/Winter, and my lip colors in pink!

    Ursula aka Blueridge Beauty

    1. I know what you mean, Ursula. Those heavier weight skincare products will be with us soon enough – make way!

  28. Jealous of all these empties posts. I would do one but mine are so beat up after that the photographs would be awful!

    1. haha, I think they look good emptied and used: more authentic 😉

  29. Wow you used up so much sunscreen! Good job 🙂 I love Seche Vite too! Nothing compares!
